Hydraulic elevators lift the cab with a piston. They need a shaft and space for the pump and controls, and in return give you a larger cab with room for a wheelchair and a companion.

The short answer
A hydraulic home elevator typically costs $22,000 to $53,000 installed, based on Fixr's national data, and needs room for a pump and tank. Hurricane Ian brought 6 to 9 feet of storm surge inundation to Naples in September 2022.

Who this is for
Hydraulic elevators suit new homes, major remodels and homes with stacked closets that can become a shaft. They are a good fit when a wheelchair user and a carer need to ride together.
Typical project sizes
Fixr says a hydraulic retrofit costs at least $40,000 and can reach $100,000 when extra construction is needed to fit and conceal it. In new construction Fixr gives about $40,000 for a hydraulic unit compared with about $25,000 for a cable-driven one.
Do hydraulic home elevators in Naples need a permit?
An elevator serving only your Naples home is outside the state elevator law, so the permits are local building and electrical ones: Collier County's Building Permits and Construction office for unincorporated addresses, or your city's building department inside Naples or Marco Island. Check with your building department, or ask the installer to, for the exact submittal list.
Collier is not a contracted elevator jurisdiction, so an elevator serving shared areas of a condo building is permitted and inspected by the state bureau directly, at $325 to install a regulated conveyance.[6][7][4][8]
Naples houses and hydraulic home elevators
About 43 percent of Collier homes and 58 percent in neighbouring Lee County are detached houses. Many newer homes are single-storey on a raised slab or raised fully above a garage, so the climb is often outside the house.

The median owner-occupied home in Collier County is valued at about $636,600. IRS Publication 502 says medical lifts usually do not add value, but elevators generally do, which affects any medical expense deduction.
Collier's housing is young: about 46 percent of homes were built in 2000 or later, and the median home dates from 1998. Newer homes often have wider stairs and stronger walls, which can make a stair lift or elevator simpler to fit than in older South Florida houses.[9][10][11][3]

Collier and Lee are in Medicaid managed care Region F, and long-term care screening starts with the Area Agency on Aging for Southwest Florida on (239) 652-6900 or its helpline (866) 413-5337. Elevators are not named among covered adaptations. Eligible veterans can apply for the VA's Specially Adapted Housing grant, up to $126,526 in fiscal year 2026; local VA care is through the Naples VA Clinic on Goodlette Road North and the Lee County VA Clinic in Cape Coral.[12][13][14][15][16][5][17]

What is different about a home lift in Naples?
Storm surge shapes everything here. Hurricane Ian brought 6 to 9 feet of inundation to Naples and 8 to 12 feet to Bonita Springs and North Naples, and the Naples Pier tide gauge recorded 6.18 feet above high tide before it was destroyed. FEMA expects a float switch or equal system on any elevator whose cab could descend below the base flood elevation, with pumps and controls kept above that level where possible.
Collier is outside the High Velocity Hurricane Zone, so outdoor lifts follow the standard Florida wind rules; the surge, salt and sun are what shorten their life.[2][18][20]
Permits in Naples
- Collier County Building Permits and Construction: Building and electrical permits for unincorporated Collier County. The City of Naples and Marco Island issue permits inside their limits; check with your building department for the submittal list.
- Florida DBPR Bureau of Elevator Safety: Regulates covered elevators directly in Collier and Lee, such as lifts in shared condo areas ($325 to install a regulated conveyance). Lifts serving only one family residence are not regulated by the bureau.
Where does the hydraulic equipment go in a flood zone?
FEMA says electrical controls and hydraulic pumps should be located above the base flood elevation when possible. It also notes that some hydraulic elevators use a battery descent feature that lowers the car to the lowest landing when power fails, and that a float switch should be built into the controller so the car cannot descend into floodwater. In low-lying parts of Florida this shapes where the machine space goes.[18]

Holed or holeless?
FEMA explains that hydraulic elevators can be direct-acting with a piston set into the ground, or holeless. For flood-prone sites it suggests exploring holeless hydraulics, which are typically used in low-rise buildings of two or three floors.[18]

Keep the cab able to park above flood level, fit a float switch if it could descend below the base flood elevation, and put pumps and controls up high. Ian brought 6 to 9 feet of inundation to Naples.
Are most Naples area homes houses?
About 43 percent of Collier homes and 58 percent of Lee County homes are detached houses.
