Most families pay for a stair lift or home elevator themselves, because Original Medicare does not cover home modifications. The main sources of help in Florida are VA housing grants for eligible veterans (up to $126,526 for the SAH grant in fiscal year 2026), Florida Medicaid long-term care home accessibility adaptations for eligible members, and the medical expense deduction in IRS Publication 502.

Does Medicare pay for a stair lift or home elevator?
No, in almost all cases. CMS says home modifications are not covered by Medicare and that suppliers must not bill for structural changes needed to install a lift system.[1] Medicare covers durable medical equipment such as hospital beds, walkers and wheelchairs, but stair lifts are not on its list.[2] Read more in does Medicare cover stair lifts?
What can veterans get?
Veterans with certain service-connected disabilities may qualify for a Specially Adapted Housing (SAH) grant of up to $126,526 or a Special Home Adaptation (SHA) grant of up to $25,350 for fiscal year 2026, and can use the grant money up to six times over a lifetime.[3] The smaller HISA benefit does not pay for porch lifts or stair glides.[4] See VA grants for home lifts.

Can Florida Medicaid help?
Florida's Statewide Medicaid Managed Care long-term care programme covers home accessibility adaptations, physical changes to the home without which a member would need institutional care, such as ramps, grab bars and wider doorways.[5] Stair lifts and elevators are not named. It is not an entitlement programme, and the first step is a screening by your local Aging and Disability Resource Center.[6] See Florida Medicaid long-term care and home changes.
Can I deduct a home lift on my taxes?
Possibly in part. IRS Publication 502 lets you deduct medical expenses on Schedule A only above 7.5% of adjusted gross income, and lists installing porch lifts and other lifts among qualifying home changes, while noting that elevators generally add value to a house, which reduces the deductible amount.[8] See tax deduction for home lifts.

Frequently asked questions
Who qualifies for a free stair lift?
No programme gives stair lifts to everyone. Eligible veterans may get VA grant help, and Florida Medicaid long-term care members may get some home adaptations. Each programme decides eligibility itself.
Can a doctor write a prescription for a stair lift?
A prescription does not make Original Medicare pay, because CMS treats stair lifts as home modifications. The VA's HISA benefit does need a VA physician's prescription, but HISA excludes stair glides.
Does homeowners insurance pay for a stair lift?
Not usually, as it is an improvement rather than damage repair. Check your own policy.
