Outdoor stair lifts are built to handle sun, rain and salt air, with covers and sealed controls. In Florida they often climb the front steps of a raised home or the steps down to a pool deck.

The short answer

An outdoor stair lift costs $4,000 to $12,000 installed, according to Fixr's national data, more than an indoor lift because it has to resist the weather and corrosion. In coastal Florida, salt air and summer storms make covers, sealed controls and a regular service schedule important.

Who this is for

An outdoor lift suits someone who can sit and transfer but cannot manage the steps up to the front door. A wheelchair user needs a porch lift or vertical platform lift instead.

Typical project sizes

Fixr says outdoor stair lifts can be fitted to patio steps, decks or docks, and notes that ramps are another option for getting in and out of the home.

Stair lift, ramp or porch lift?

Fixr puts a wheelchair ramp at $1,700 to $5,000 and says the ADA recommends a slope no steeper than 1:12 in new construction, which means 12 inches of ramp for every inch of rise. A porch five steps high needs a very long ramp, which is when an outdoor stair lift or porch lift starts to make sense.[2]

Looking after an outdoor lift in Florida

  • Keep the weather cover on when the lift is parked
  • Rinse salt spray off the rail if you live near the coast, if the maker allows it
  • Park the chair and charge it fully before a storm
  • Book a yearly service; Fixr puts stair lift maintenance at $100 to $200 a year

Frequently asked questions

Can an outdoor stair lift get wet?

Outdoor models are built for rain and sun, but use the cover and follow the maker's guidance on cleaning and storms.

Will the VA pay for an outdoor stair lift?

The VA's HISA benefit excludes porch lifts and stair glides. Veterans with certain service-connected disabilities may qualify for SAH or SHA grants instead; see our VA guide.

Does an outdoor stair lift need a permit?

Florida's elevator law does not cover stairway chairlifts in private residences. Your city or county may still require an electrical permit for a new outdoor outlet.
