Reconditioned lifts are former rentals or returned units that have been checked and refurbished. Rentals suit a short recovery, for example after a hip or knee operation.

The short answer
A reconditioned stair lift costs about $1,500 to $2,500 installed, roughly half to two-thirds of a new one, according to Fixr. Renting costs $150 to $500 a month plus a $500 to $1,000 deposit and $800 to $1,200 for installation and removal, so it suits short-term needs.

Who this is for
Reconditioned lifts suit straight staircases and anyone who wants a safe lift on a tighter budget. Rentals suit recovery after surgery or an injury, or a parent visiting for a few months.
Typical project sizes
Fixr says reconditioned lifts are usually former rentals or incorrectly ordered products that have had extensive safety checks before resale.
When does renting stop making sense?
Using Fixr's figures, the fees to install and remove a rental are $800 to $1,200 on top of the monthly rent. After several months, the total can match a reconditioned lift that you own. If you expect to need the lift for more than a few months, compare a purchase quote too.[1]

What to ask about a reconditioned lift
- How old is it, and who refurbished it?
- Which parts were replaced, especially the batteries?
- What warranty comes with it?
- Can the rail be cut to fit my stairs?
| Option | Typical cost |
|---|---|
| Reconditioned, installed | $1,500 to $2,500 |
| Rental | $150 to $500 a month |
| Rental deposit | $500 to $1,000 |
| Rental installation and removal | $800 to $1,200 |
| New straight lift, installed | $2,000 to $8,000 |
Frequently asked questions
Are reconditioned stair lifts safe?
They can be, if they have been properly refurbished and tested. Fixr says resold lifts usually go through extensive safety checks. Ask what was checked and what warranty you get.
Can I rent a curved stair lift?
Rarely, because curved rails are made for one staircase. Rentals are mostly straight lifts.
Will someone remove the lift when we no longer need it?
Yes. Fixr says some companies remove stair lifts at no cost, and others charge $100 to $300.
