A platform lift carries a person while they stay in their wheelchair or scooter. It is often the answer when a ramp would be too long and an elevator too big a project.
- Free in-home consultation, no obligation
- Home elevators, stair lifts and platform lifts
- Miami-Dade, Broward, Palm Beach, Tampa Bay and Naples
The short answer
A platform or wheelchair lift lets a person ride in their wheelchair, and installed prices commonly fall between about $5,000 and $20,000: Fixr gives $5,000 to $20,000 for platform stair lifts and $8,000 to $20,000 for simpler outdoor elevator lifts. A vertical platform lift beside a porch is often far shorter than the ramp you would need for the same rise.

Who are platform lifts for?
Platform lifts are for wheelchair and scooter users, and for anyone who cannot transfer safely to a stair lift seat. FEMA describes platform lifts as designed to move a person in a wheelchair from one level to another, often with a door on each side.
- A raised porch or front door
- A split-level home or sunken living room
- A staircase where a wheelchair must go up with the rider
Typical project sizes
Fixr's national figures: platform stair lifts $5,000 to $20,000, outdoor elevator lifts $8,000 to $20,000, and wheelchair ramps $1,700 to $5,000 for comparison.
Which Florida rules apply to a wheelchair lift at home?
Florida's elevator law lists inclined and vertical wheelchair lifts in private residences as equipment it does not cover. The Florida Building Code requires platform lifts to comply with ASME A18.1, so ask which standard the model meets. Local building and electrical permits may still apply.[4][5]
Flood and storm planning
FEMA notes that when platform lifts are installed outdoors it can be more difficult to keep equipment above the base flood elevation, making them susceptible to flood damage. In a flood zone, ask where the drive and controls sit and how the lift is protected in a storm.[6]

| Option | Typical installed cost | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Wheelchair ramp | $1,700 to $5,000 | About 12 inches of ramp per inch of rise |
| Platform stair lift (inclined) | $5,000 to $20,000 | Rides the staircase |
| Outdoor elevator lift | $8,000 to $20,000 | Aluminium or other durable metals |
Platform and wheelchair lifts services
Vertical platform lifts
A platform that rises straight up, like a small open elevator, for porches, decks and split levels.
Porch lifts
Short-rise wheelchair lifts that replace a long ramp at the front or back door.
Inclined platform lifts
Wheelchair platforms that ride a rail up the staircase, where there is no room for a vertical lift.
Frequently asked questions
How much does a wheelchair lift for a home cost?
National figures from Fixr put platform stair lifts at $5,000 to $20,000 and outdoor elevator lifts at $8,000 to $20,000 installed. The rise, the enclosure and the site work decide where you land.
Is a wheelchair lift better than a ramp?
For a short rise, a ramp is often cheaper. For a porch more than a few steps high, a ramp gets very long at about 12 inches per inch of rise, so a lift takes far less space.
Will the VA pay for a porch lift?
Not through HISA: the VA lists porch lifts and stair glides as items HISA will not pay for. Veterans eligible for SAH or SHA grants should ask the VA about those instead.
Can a wheelchair lift be used in the rain?
Outdoor models are made for the weather. Ask about the finish, drainage and storm parking for a coastal home.
