What to change first, what it costs and where help may come from.
The short answer
Aging in place remodels typically cost $3,000 to $15,000, with a national average of $9,500, according to Fixr; grab bars cost as little as $85 to $300 each, while a stair lift averages about $4,000 and a home elevator $35,000 to $60,000. Start with the changes that prevent falls on the routes used every day: the bathroom, the stairs and the front door.

Which home changes help most?
Most plans start with the places where falls happen and the routes used every day. Ask a doctor or occupational therapist which changes suit the person; we can help with the lifts and access.

| Widen a doorway | $300 to $2,500 |
| Stair handrails | $800 to $1,200 |
| Wheelchair ramp | $1,700 to $5,000 |

Should you build a ramp or add a lift?
A ramp is often the cheapest way to make a few steps step-free. Fixr says the ADA recommends a slope no steeper than 1:12 for new construction, so every inch of rise needs a foot of ramp, and a rest or turn platform is required every 30 feet. For a raised Florida home, a porch lift usually takes far less space.[3]
What about the stairs?
For someone who can sit and stand safely, a stair lift is the simplest fix; Fixr's national average is $4,000. If a wheelchair needs to go upstairs, compare a home elevator or a through-floor lift.[4]
Can funding help with home changes?
Florida Medicaid long-term care covers home accessibility adaptations for eligible members, with ramps, grab bars, wider doorways and bathroom changes named as examples. IRS Publication 502 lists ramps, wider doorways, railings and grab bars among improvements that usually do not increase a home's value, so their cost can count in full as a medical expense, deductible above 7.5% of adjusted gross income. General information only, not medical, legal or financial advice.[5][6]
What this means for you
Walk the home with the person who lives there, note every step, threshold and tight turn, and fix the daily routes first. See Florida Medicaid long-term care and tax deduction for home lifts for help with costs.
