A stair lift is a seat that rides a rail fixed to your stairs. It is the quickest and least costly way to make a staircase safe again, and a straight lift is usually fitted in a few hours.

The short answer

A stair lift costs about $4,000 on average for a standard straight staircase, with most between $3,000 and $5,000 installed, according to Fixr's national data. Curved stair lifts cost $8,000 to $20,000 because the rail is made to fit your stairs, and a straight lift usually takes four to five hours to fit.

Is a stair lift right for you or your parent?

A stair lift suits someone who can walk short distances and sit down and stand up safely, but for whom the stairs have become tiring, painful or risky. If a wheelchair needs to go upstairs too, a platform lift or home elevator is the better fit.

If you are arranging this for a parent, involve them from the start: the seat height, the controls and where the lift parks all matter to the person who will ride it.

  • Arthritis, breathlessness or balance problems on the stairs
  • Coming home after a hospital stay
  • A second floor that holds the only bedroom or bathroom
  • Outdoor steps to a raised front door

What most stair lift projects look like

Most homes need a straight lift for a single flight. Fixr puts the national average at $4,000 installed, says a second-hand model can be fitted for around $2,000, and says custom curved lifts can reach $20,000.

Fixr also notes that a standard straight stair lift takes about four to five hours to install, and annual maintenance usually costs $100 to $200.

Battery or mains powered?

Many stair lifts run on batteries that charge when the chair is parked, so the lift keeps working in a short power cut. Fixr gives $3,000 to $5,000 for battery-operated stair lifts and $4,000 to $7,000 for mains electric models. In Florida, where storms can cut power for days, ask how many trips a full battery gives.[1]

Do you need a permit for a stair lift in Florida?

Not from the state. Florida's elevator law lists inclined stairway chairlifts in private residences as equipment it does not cover, and they do not need a state certificate of operation. Some counties or cities may still want an electrical or building permit, so your installer should check with your local building department before fitting.[2]

Does Medicare pay for a stair lift?

Usually not. CMS says home modifications are not covered by Medicare, and stair lifts are not on Medicare's list of covered durable medical equipment. Some veterans, Medicaid long-term care members and taxpayers may find help elsewhere; our paying for it guide explains each option.[3][4]

Frequently asked questions

How much does a stair lift cost in Florida?

Fixr's national average is $4,000 for a standard installation, with most between $3,000 and $5,000. Curved stair lifts cost $8,000 to $20,000 and outdoor models $4,000 to $12,000. We confirm the price for your stairs after a free visit.

How long does it take to install a stair lift?

Fixr says a standard straight stair lift takes about four to five hours to install. A curved rail has to be made to measure first, so it takes longer from order to fitting.

Can a stair lift be fitted to a narrow staircase?

Often, yes. Seats and footrests fold up when the lift is not in use, and perch seats suit narrow or steep stairs. We measure the width at the home visit.

Is it better to rent or buy a stair lift?

Renting can make sense for a short recovery. Fixr puts rentals at $150 to $500 a month, plus a deposit and $800 to $1,200 for installation and removal. For longer use, buying, or buying reconditioned, usually costs less.

Does insurance cover stair lifts?

Original Medicare usually does not, because CMS treats them as home modifications. Check any Medicare Advantage or other plan directly, and see our guide to paying for a home lift.
