A stair lift is a seat that rides a rail fixed to your stairs. It is the quickest and least costly way to make a staircase safe again, and a straight lift is usually fitted in a few hours.

The short answer

A stair lift in Boca Raton costs about $4,000 installed for a straight staircase on Fixr's national average, and $8,000 to $20,000 for a curved staircase, because the rail is made to measure. If your home has a sweeping or turning staircase, have it measured before you budget.

What most stair lift projects look like

Most homes need a straight lift for a single flight. Fixr puts the national average at $4,000 installed, says a second-hand model can be fitted for around $2,000, and says custom curved lifts can reach $20,000.

Fixr also notes that a standard straight stair lift takes about four to five hours to install, and annual maintenance usually costs $100 to $200.

Curved and turning staircases

If your staircase turns, sweeps or has a landing part-way, you need a curved rail. Fixr calls curved stair lifts the most expensive type, at $8,000 to $20,000, because each rail is designed for one staircase. A straight lift with a hinged rail is cheaper where the stairs allow it.[1]

Standing lifts for stiff knees and narrow stairs

Perch and standing stair lifts cost $2,500 to $10,000 nationally and suit riders who find sitting down and standing up painful. They need good balance, so they are not right for everyone.[1]

How stair lifts are planned in Boca Raton

With about a quarter of residents aged 65 or older, Boca Raton has more stair lifts in daily, long-term use than most places, so comfort, a reliable battery and a service plan matter as much as the first price. Turning staircases in two-storey homes mean curved rails come up often, at $8,000 to $20,000.

Villas and townhouses, about 12 percent of Palm Beach County housing, usually have a single straight stair, which is the simplest and cheapest fit. Check the association rules first if the stair is in a shared entry.[3][1][9]

Do stair lifts in Boca Raton need a permit?

A stair lift inside your Boca Raton home is outside Florida's elevator law. We have not found a published Boca Raton or Palm Beach County rule on stair lift permits, so check with your building department (the city's Building Division, or the county's for unincorporated addresses) or ask the installer to before fitting.

In condo buildings, a lift in a shared stairwell is not a private residence lift. Palm Beach County has no contracted elevator office, so the state bureau handles those directly.[6][7][8][5]

Boca Raton houses and stair lifts

About 43 percent of Boca Raton homes are detached houses. Mediterranean-style two-storey homes with curved staircases are a familiar Boca Raton type, and they are where curved stair lifts and compact elevators come in.

About 24 percent of Boca Raton residents, and 25 percent across Palm Beach County, are 65 or older, well above the share in Miami-Dade or Broward. Many lifts here are planned for long daily use, so seat comfort, battery life and service matter as much as price.

About 43 percent of Boca Raton homes were built before 1980, against 33 percent across Palm Beach County. Older homes may need a new circuit or some framing before a lift goes in, which the survey checks.[9][3][4]

What is different about a home lift in Palm Beach County?

Palm Beach County is outside the High Velocity Hurricane Zone, which covers only Miami-Dade and Broward, so the stricter High Velocity Hurricane Zone product rules that apply a few miles south do not apply here. Coastal and Intracoastal homes should still check their flood zone and plan any elevator with a float switch if its cab could descend below the base flood elevation.

In condo buildings, a lift that serves shared areas is not a private residence lift. In Palm Beach County the state elevator bureau issues those permits directly, at $325 to install a regulated conveyance, and only registered elevator companies can apply.[14][15][5][16][6]

Battery or mains powered?

Many stair lifts run on batteries that charge when the chair is parked, so the lift keeps working in a short power cut. Fixr gives $3,000 to $5,000 for battery-operated stair lifts and $4,000 to $7,000 for mains electric models. In Florida, where storms can cut power for days, ask how many trips a full battery gives.[1]

Do you need a permit for a stair lift in Florida?

Not from the state. Florida's elevator law lists inclined stairway chairlifts in private residences as equipment it does not cover, and they do not need a state certificate of operation. Some counties or cities may still want an electrical or building permit, so your installer should check with your local building department before fitting.[6]

Does Medicare pay for a stair lift?

Usually not. CMS says home modifications are not covered by Medicare, and stair lifts are not on Medicare's list of covered durable medical equipment. Some veterans, Medicaid long-term care members and taxpayers may find help elsewhere; our paying for it guide explains each option.[10][18]
