The short answer
Annual stair lift maintenance usually costs $100 to $200, according to Fixr, and many problems come from batteries that no longer hold a charge or a chair that was parked off its charging point. A yearly check by a technician catches most issues before they leave someone stuck on the wrong floor.

Who this is for
For anyone whose stair lift has stopped, beeps, moves in jerks or will not charge, and for families who have inherited a lift with a house.
Quick checks before you call

- Is the chair parked exactly on its charging point at the top or bottom?
- Is the key switch on, and is the power socket for the charger switched on?
- Is the seat swivelled fully back to the riding position?
- Is anything touching the safety edges on the footrest or carriage?
- Is the seat belt fastened, on models that require it?
What a yearly service covers
Fixr says stair lifts should be checked over by a professional once a year, and that many companies include yearly check-ups when you buy. A service usually includes inspecting and cleaning the rail, testing the safety sensors and checking the batteries.[1]
Frequently asked questions
How long do stair lift batteries last?
It depends on the model and how often the lift is used. If the lift slows down or beeps when it leaves the charge point, the batteries may need replacing.
Can you fix a stair lift I did not buy from you?
Usually, yes. Tell us the make and model, and a photo of the label under the seat helps.
Is it worth repairing an old stair lift?
Often, for straight lifts with available parts. If parts are no longer made, a reconditioned lift may cost less than a big repair.
