Who this is for

For anyone whose stair lift has stopped, beeps, moves in jerks or will not charge, and for families who have inherited a lift with a house.

Who regulates stair lift repair and service in Tampa?

Servicing a stair lift in your own home needs no state permit. Shared stairwell lifts in Hillsborough and Pinellas condos are regulated by the state bureau directly.

After Helene's surge, which reached 5 to 7 feet within Tampa Bay, any outdoor lift that sat in salt water should be inspected before use: water in the motor or charging contacts can fail later even if the lift runs at first.[7][8][3]

Who uses stair lift repair and service in Hillsborough

About 27 percent of Pinellas County residents are 65 or older, against 16 percent in Hillsborough. Pinellas has an older population than Hillsborough, and older housing to match.

About 59 percent of Pinellas County homes were built before 1980, and the median home dates from 1976; in the City of Tampa the figure is 42 percent. Bungalows in Seminole Heights and Hyde Park and 1960s block ranches in Pinellas often have raised floors with front steps, narrow doorways and older wiring.

Condos are a smaller share here than in South Florida: about 22 percent of homes in the City of Tampa and 11 percent across Hillsborough are in buildings of 20 or more units. Where they exist, a lift inside your own unit is a private residence lift under Florida law, with the association's approval.[2][4][9][7]

Help paying for stair lift service in Hillsborough

IRS Publication 502 lets the upkeep of a lift added for medical care count as a medical expense, above 7.5 percent of adjusted gross income. For other help at home, Senior Connection Center on (813) 740-3888 serves Hillsborough.[10][5][6]

What is different about a home lift in Tampa Bay?

Tampa Bay is outside the High Velocity Hurricane Zone, which covers only Miami-Dade and Broward, so outdoor lifts follow the standard Florida wind rules. Storm surge is the bigger planning point: Hurricane Helene brought 5 to 7 feet of inundation within Tampa Bay in September 2024, and the St. Petersburg tide gauge set a record of 6.31 feet above high tide. FEMA expects a float switch on any elevator that could descend below the base flood elevation.[11][3][12]

Permits in Tampa

  • City of Tampa Construction Services Division: Provides all building permit and inspection services for property development in the City of Tampa, including the building and electrical permits for a home lift.
  • Pinellas County Building and Development: Building permits in unincorporated Pinellas County; St. Petersburg, Clearwater and other cities run their own building departments.
  • Florida DBPR Bureau of Elevator Safety: Regulates covered elevators directly in Hillsborough and Pinellas, such as lifts in shared condo areas ($325 to install a regulated conveyance). Lifts serving only one family residence are not regulated by the bureau.

Quick checks before you call

  • Is the chair parked exactly on its charging point at the top or bottom?
  • Is the key switch on, and is the power socket for the charger switched on?
  • Is the seat swivelled fully back to the riding position?
  • Is anything touching the safety edges on the footrest or carriage?
  • Is the seat belt fastened, on models that require it?

What a yearly service covers

Fixr says stair lifts should be checked over by a professional once a year, and that many companies include yearly check-ups when you buy. A service usually includes inspecting and cleaning the rail, testing the safety sensors and checking the batteries.[1]

Frequently asked questions

Should an outdoor stair lift hit by storm surge be serviced?

Yes, before anyone rides it. Salt water in the motor or contacts can cause failures later even if it runs at first.

Who regulates stair lifts in Tampa Bay condo stairwells?

The state Bureau of Elevator Safety, because Hillsborough and Pinellas have no contracted local elevator office.

How many Pinellas residents are 65 or older?

About 27 percent, against 16 percent in Hillsborough, according to the 2024 American Community Survey.
