For riders who find sitting down and standing up hard, and for narrow stairs.

A perch or standing stair lift lets the rider lean against a small seat or stand on a platform. It takes up less room than a full seat and suits stiff knees and hips.

The short answer

A standing stair lift costs $2,500 to $10,000 installed, according to Fixr's national data. It suits people who have flexibility or movement problems that make sitting down and getting up difficult or painful, and it can fit stairs that are too narrow for a full seat.

Who this is for

Standing and perch lifts are for riders with good balance and grip who find bending their knees painful. They are not a good choice for anyone who feels faint or unsteady on their feet; ask a doctor or occupational therapist if you are unsure.

Typical project sizes

Fixr says standing lifts are generally installed on straight stairs, and that standing models for outdoor or curved stairs cost substantially more. Perch seats start from about $2,500 installed.

What to check before choosing a standing lift

  • Can the rider hold the grab handle firmly for the whole ride?
  • Is there head clearance along the whole staircase when standing?
  • Does the platform fold up so others can still use the stairs?
  • Is there a seat belt or hip support on the perch seat?

Frequently asked questions

Are standing stair lifts safe?

They can be for the right rider. Fixr notes every stair lift must have a belt or restraint to secure the passenger. Anyone with poor balance should use a seated lift.

Can a standing lift be converted to a seated one later?

Some models offer both a perch and a full seat on the same rail. Ask before you buy if needs may change.

Do standing lifts work on curved stairs?

Some do, but Fixr says curved or outdoor standing models cost substantially more.
